Silverfish are a nocturnal, blue coloured wingless insect. Their name comes from their look and movements which are similar to that of a fish. The Silverfish typically grow to about 1/2 inch in length and can be identified by having 2 long antennas on their head and 3 prominent growths in the rear that resemble tails. Silverfish preferred environment are dark, moist and humid areas, The most common rooms where Silverfish can be found are kitchens, laundry rooms, attics or basements. Within these rooms you will generally find Silverfish in dark, hard to reach corners such as in/under sinks, bathtubs, in storage boxes, bookcases,

Silverfish do not in themselves pose any danger to human health. However Silverfish would be categorised as a as a pest due to the destructive consequence of their presence in a home. As Silverfish survive on consuming household items, such as photographs, books and clothes. The  Silverfish do this by extracting mould, food matter and sugars from these items.

The presence of Silverfish can often a symptom of a larger problem in a property, often related to dampness, plumbing or some other structural deficiency. Fundamentally the Silverfish is very difficult to keep out of a house due to their size, as they can often be carried inside within cardboard boxes or containers, which they in turn feed upon.

Once they have gotten a hiding place in a property and begin to reproduce, the population can spread rapidly. Silverfish can lay eggs at any season of the year. Females’ egg numbers vary broadly depending on species but their quantity may range from 2 to 20 eggs per day and these grow from larva to adult in 3-4 months.
